Many years ago I made three trips to Svalbard over a period of three years to see the northern lights. Fortune shone on the third trip thankfully and my need to see them was met with an addition of polar bears. Fast forward twenty odd years and now the Northern Lights can be seen here in the North East of England fairly regularly. It’s still true that you will see a better show if you can get away from built up areas and avoid light pollution from street lamps and buildings. My go to place is now much closer to home, just up the A1 to Lindisfarne in Northumberland. The painting is based on a sighting there during October 2024.
