I sometimes make a painting and it stays with me a for a while, it isn’t offered for sale immediately. The time can vary greatly. In the case of this painting it was almost two years, as I had become quite fond of it myself. However as I was painting other things in that time it was eventually allowed to leave to find it’s true home.
The painting was created following a walk along the bank top above the fish quay in North Shields shortly after the end of lock down in early 2021. It was a particularly moonlit night, the sea and river were calm and there were the occasional fireworks lighting the sky on the sough bank of the Tyne.
I didn’t take photos, I don’t like working from reference material, I prefer to just work from my head. I called it Surreal Shields as it has the elements of the view I saw that evening but not necessarily in the correct place.
Over the months it has been available it has had many comments, some complimentary others not. I am a broad shouldered, tough skinned artist, I just take them in my stride.
What do you think of it?
